Sleight of hand on details is nothing new to publisher Activision, and it appears to have made another appearance in the case of Destiny: The Taken King. Not too long after removing the option to buy Call of Duty: Black Ops III DLC individually on PC, a change has happened with the PlayStation Exclusive content for Destiny: The Taken King.
First spotted on Reddit, the change at first appears to be a rather simple one, but it goes further and shows some longer reaching consequences potentially. The exclusive content had previously had a disclaimer that it was exclusive until at least Fall 2016, meaning that Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners were expecting to get the content this fall. Now, in the run up to Destiny: Rise of Iron, it has been changed to say until at least Fall of 2017 on the Destiny: The Taken King PlayStation exclusives page.
Further questions have been raised by the fact that the PlayStation exclusives page has been further edited to include content from Rise of Iron, making it tougher to confirm the Spring PlayStation exclusive content, which appears to be affected by this. While this is not positively confirmed by this change, Destiny: The Collection has been saying there will be 2 PlayStation exclusive weapons, despite there being none announced for Rise of Iron.
This exclusivity also affects players on PlayStation in some ways. The weapons that are PlayStation exclusives aren't available at the famed shopkeeper Xur who often sells rare items. If it had been removed from exclusivity, they would have almost certainly been put into that rotation like the original Destiny PlayStation exclusives, which did lose their timed exclusivity after a year.
The most likely reason for this change is the delay of Destiny 2 from a 2016 release to a 2017 release. While it had been widely rumored to be coming in September 2016 before it was announced to be 2017, Edge Magazine (summarized via Reddit) confirmed in an interview that it had been pushed back. That means the plan was likely always for Destiny: The Taken King timed exclusives to expire after Destiny 2's release, and in fact that may be what the contract required. Apparently, Rise of Iron was conceived after the delay as something to fill the gap between the releases.
We've reached out to Activision and Bungie for more information on this situation but have yet to receive a reply. However, Polygon is reporting that Activision did confirm that the change was accurate, although they would not say when it occurred. We still are hoping to get more information and will update this article as we learn more.
