Destiny fans got a delightful surprise at this year's Gamescom. Bungie revealed a brand new trailer showing off the new subclasses hitting Destiny 2's latest expansion, Beyond Light.
In this brand new premium expansion, each of the game's classes will receive a brand new subclass that gives them the chilling power of stasis. Warlocks will get the Shadebinder, which will grant them an icy spear to shoot freezing projectiles from afar. Hunters can become Revenants, a more aggressive form of knife-thrower that includes the ability to ricochet their thrown projectiles off walls and deploy area-of-effect freezing grenades. As for Titans, it looks like they will be able to call down walls of ice and waves of debilitating frost as the Behemoth.
The trailer teased at other content coming with the new expansion. New armor and weapons naturally sprung up, all of which are rocking a more rugged winter wear, particularly the armor shown off for the Titans. Furthermore, there were glimpses of the brand new location the new content will center around, the moon of Europa.
This is a major addition to Destiny 2's gameplay experience, and it looks ready to mix up the community as a whole. This is the first time since The Taken King expansion in 2015 that a brand new elemental subclass has been introduced for each class. Stasis is also a brand new damage element that's being added to this game, and at first glance it looks to be a well thought out shake up. This isn't just a different flavor of damage, but a completely different gameplay feel centered around slowing down enemies and setting up terrain in the environment. I can already hearing Crucible players demanding nerfs and dedicated Raid players figuring out optimal builds.
It's been well over a year since Bungie began self-publishing Destiny and embracing their franchise as a free-to-play action MMO experience, and if they can maintain this level of interest with novel twists on their great foundation, it is a path I am more than willing to walk with them.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light will be out November 10th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
