Eight long years of terrifying demonic combat
After eight long years of terrifying demonic combat, it seems that the Demon's Souls servers will be shutting down for good in February 2018 according to a news post from Atlus.
Before the Dark Souls games exploded on the scene, Demon's Souls was the go-to for a challenging role-playing game full of swords, sorcery, and terrifying demons. Originally debuting in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, the spiritual predecessor to Dark Souls featured many hallmarks of the series such as using souls as currency and somewhat unforgiving gameplay for the faint of heart. Now, it seems that the Demon's Souls servers are shutting down early next year after nearly a decade of fun.
In a news post on their website, Atlus has stated that they will be shutting down all of the game's online functionality. The core game will remain playable, but online features such as in-game messaging, player death locations, and World Tendency features will no longer work after the shutdown date. World Tendency is essentially a modifier applied to areas that will adjust its difficulty (and subsequent rewards from enemies) based on the player's actions. While the feature will continue to function in single-player, a portion of the calculation towards a White or Black World Tendency was taken from the entire online player base in aggregate.
Demon's Souls was the game that heralded the coming of many similarly challenging titles such as Dark Souls & Bloodborne, and thankfully you'll still likely to be able to play those games online for many years to come. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of playing Demon's Souls, you can grab it for $19.99 or your regional equivalent on the PlayStation Store for the PlayStation 3 - you'll still have a couple of months to try your hand at the online features of this classic (provided that you own a PlayStation 3, that is). Demon's Souls servers are shutting down on February 28, 2018.
