Deep Rock Galactic developer Ghost Ship games has revealed that the Legacy version of the game, which was introduced in order to celebrate its fifth anniversary, will remain available indefinitely. Deep Rock Galactic Legacy was originally slated to disappear after the anniversary event's conclusion, but it proved popular enough that it's staying.

Back in February, Ghost Ship announced that it would hold a special event to commemorate Deep Rock Galactic's fifth anniversary, and that part of that event would entail introducing a warts-and-all Legacy version of Deep Rock Galactic. The idea was to show players just how far the game had come in five years, but it turns out that the Legacy version is pretty popular. Who'd have thunk?

On Steam, Ghost Ship says that it's "heard from a lot of" its players that Deep Rock Galactic Legacy should stay, and so it will. However, it'll now be accessible via its own unique Steam branch. Save games will be shared between the two versions, so you won't have to start again every time you want to switch between them, which is nice.

Deep Rock Galactic is pretty "cool" (ahem) now, but if you want an indefinite snapshot of its 2018 incarnation, you're in luck.

It's worth noting that because this is a Legacy version, Ghost Ship won't be updating it. The idea, after all, is to leave it in place as a permanent snapshot of what Deep Rock Galactic looked like in 2018. Updating it would be a rather pointless endeavor, as the studio sees it, so Ghost Ship is asking you to "consider the bugs to be features" and to take crashes as a reminder to play the live version every once in a while.

Ghost Ship is having a pretty good time of it right now. Deep Rock Galactic is going from strength to strength, and the developer also recently announced a new publishing division with which it will publish and champion new indie games. Ghost Ship Publishing's first outing in this capacity will be auto-shooter Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, currently slated for release sometime this year. Stay tuned for more info on that and all other things Deep Rock Galactic.
