New Update, New Price
Dead Cells, the early access rogue-lite Metroidvania, is set for a price change after the Steam winter sale winds down. Developer Motion Twin released a new post detailing the price change. Although the game has been sold for $16.99 (currently $12.74, considering the sale) since the early access release in May, after 1 p.m. ET on January 4, future customers will be looking at a $19.99 price tag.
The Metroidvania hit Steam’s early access on May 10, with a projected release within 12 months, although if more time is needed, Motion Twin won’t hesitate to keep working on the game. The incoming price increase isn’t necessarily a surprising announcement; from the beginning, the game’s Steam page stated, “We will probably increase the price during or after the early access based on the amount of content available and feedback from the community.”
The community post on Steam also came with a vlog from Motion Twin. The video recounted all the updates Dead Cells received since May, including the recently added Foundry Update that added the rest of the core features the development team envisioned for the final build. The end of the video also confirms the price increase to $19.99, with an additional announcement that the game may cost even more once it leaves early access.
Toward the end of the video, however, Motion Twins also hints at the likelihood of console releases for Dead Cells in the near future, saying that a console version “is looking good across all platforms for 2018.” More news is set to follow soon. As of now, the game is only available on PC.
Dead Cells, despite its early access label, is a game that already feels complete. The Foundry Update recently added new mechanics like mutations and weapon upgrades, which can radically change any given run through the game. The update focuses on providing the player with more customizable options across the many times they’ll start the game again.
