Dead Cells, a Metroidvania with roguelite elements and a dash of Dark Souls, is coming to Steam Early Access on May 10 according to a press release.

Billed as a "roguevania", the game sets out to combine elements of roguelike gameplay with that of Metroidvania games. It also touts  "Souls-like combat", and players will have to learn the patterns of enemies and how to fight them effectively in a fair (but brutally unforgiving) combat system. Although death can (and will) happen, the player will be able to unlock permanent upgrades for successive playthroughs.

US Gamer revealed some more details about the core gameplay. After the player dies, they'll respawn in a room full of jars that show all of the abilities that they've unlocked as well as 50% of their earned gold. (Upgrades will allow players to reduce gold loss down to 0%). The levels have a hint of procedural generation in them, so the game will likely have more of a focus on responding to the situation at hand rather than memorizing entire levels and enemy spawns by rote. As with most Metroidvania, Dead Cells will have areas that cannot yet be accessed without the use of certain abilities that the player might not have at the moment. Other areas of the game will be locked by a timer; if a player wishes to go down a time-gated route, they'll have to be able to navigate their way past all of the obstacles in their path as quickly as possible.

Dead Cells will be launching on Steam Early Access on May 10, 2017. If it sounds like the sort of thing that might interest you, you can add the game to your Steam wishlist by heading over to its Steam store page.

Quick Take

Seems like a more brutal, grimdark version of Rogue Legacy which had somewhat similar overall mechanics. I played the everloving heck out of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and its ilk, so this looks like something I might really enjoy. It's definitely something I'm going to be keeping my eye on.

What do you think of Dead Cells? Do you think it will be able to live up to the legacy of classic Metroidvanias like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night? Let us know in the comments below!
