The Dead by Daylight 5th Anniversary Event is now live and that's not the only surprise — the Dead by Daylight player count has crossed 100,000 concurrents on Steam for the first time ever.

Dead by Daylight is a PvP horror game with a twist — the teams are not exactly balanced in an even battle. One side stands the Survivors, a bunch of regular people who are trying to escape with their lives. On the other side is the Killer, a supernatural entity that's all too ready to capture and kill them. This asymmetric gameplay can be a lot of fun and the launch of a new event today shows that over 100,000 people are enjoying it on Steam alone.

Dead by Daylight Player Count Surprisingly Grows 5 Years After Launch

As shown on Steam Charts (via Reddit), the Dead by Daylight player count peaked at 105,052 players earlier today. There's been a bit of a dip, but it may very well go back up later in the day as people get out of work and school on the east coast.

While Dead by Daylight hasn't been insanely popular, it has nonetheless maintained a respectable community on Steam. It's averaged 40,000–75,000 peak players for the last two years or so and 20,000–40,000 peak players for the same range. The recent spike in the Dead by Daylight player count is also reflected in its average player count, reaching an all-time high of 48,344.1 for the last 30 days.

What's New in the Dead by Daylight 5th Anniversary Event?

So, what caused the spike in the Dead by Daylight player count? There are two likely contributors: the Dead by Daylight 5th Anniversary event and a pretty great discount for the game on Steam.

The Dead by Daylight 5th Anniversary Event brings back Anniversary Crowns. Either Killers or Survivors can grab a crown during the course of a game; manage to win the game and you'll get to keep the cosmetic forever. Also arriving in this update is a new set of Community Challenges related to these special cosmetics. As the community collects more and more Anniversary Crowns, players will unlock cool new charms and outfits.

Naturally, this update is also bringing some cool discounts and giveaways, too; you can read about all of the fine details in today's Dead by Daylight 5th Anniversary Event announcement. You can enjoy this limited-time event from now until July 15, 2021.

If you haven't yet jumped into the game, it's never been a better time to grab it — you can buy Dead by Daylight for PC via Steam starting at $11.99 or your regional equivalent until July 12, 2021; otherwise, you can buy the game on other platforms via its official website starting at its regular price of $29.99.
