Dauntless developer Phoenix Labs has been acquired by Garena, a subsidiary of Sea Limited.
A press release has announced that Sea Limited's gaming subsidiary Garena has purchased 100% of Phoenix Labs, the company behind the free-to-play title Dauntless. This purchase should allow Phoenix Labs to continue their work on their current product while also developing some new ones. Jesse Houston, Phoenix Labs' CEO and Co-Founder, had the following to say on the acquisition.
"Our partners at Garena have been our most steadfast supporters since the early days of Phoenix Labs, and we are excited to join forces with a global games leader, with this next step, we’re able to ensure that we can provide the best possible experience for Dauntless players around the world. We’re extremely excited about what the future holds for Phoenix Labs, as we continue to support our ever-growing Dauntless community and explore future games."
Who is the Company that Acquired the Dauntless Developer?
If you don't live in Southeast Asia, you probably don't know what Garena is. Simply put, it's kind of like a regional version of Valve. They have their own gaming client, they run esports events, and they also publish games.
Garena acts as the gaming arm of Sea Limited's tech empire and will more or less focus on growing Phoenix Labs and helping the Dauntless developer continue to work on their game while also creating new experiences.
For the average user, though, this probably won't mean much in the short term. Dauntless will keep on keepin' on, and hopefully, Phoenix Labs will use some of these newfound resources to create even more great games.
