The fine folks at Weather Factory have announced that Cultist Simulator sales have crossed 100,000 units as of the beginning of February 2019. In celebration of this milestone, the team behind this interesting indie game took the time to break down their financial situation and how the development of this game played out from cradle to grave.

To start things off, I think it's important to say this: if you have the slightest desire to be a game developer, you should really read Weather Factory's breakdown of Cultist Simulator sales in its entirety. It delves into the reality of indie gaming development that few outsiders get to see without taking the time to talk to a developer personally and I think it would make for a worthwhile read for any aspiring game dev.

Moving on to the actual post, Cultist Simulator sales have surpassed 100,000 units. This is on the backs of a deal with Humble Bundle which advanced them $60,000 in exchange for publishing rights and 30% of the game's sales. The advance money combined with their Kickstarter pledges gave them the budget they needed to get the job done. If they sold under 17,000 units, the deal with Humble Bundle would work out in their favor. If they sold more than 17,000 units, the deal would be in Humble Bundle's favor.

Obviously, Cultist Simulator sold more than 100,000 copies so Humble Bundle got a really good deal. These kinds of numbers might not have been possible without the backing of a publisher like Humble Bundle in the first place, so it's a little difficult to say whether or not Weather Factory ultimately got a good deal. Their main goal was to make a few bucks and get their name out there, and that is something that they've certainly accomplished.

You can read the full breakdown of sales and the game's budget over at Weather Factory's website. In the meantime, the developers are hard at work deciding between three projects codenamed OphirProcopius, and That Damn Library Game. Whatever they decide to go with, it will probably be an interesting piece of entertainment.
