War Thunder publisher Gaijin Entertainment has announced Cubic Odyssey, an ambitious open-world space adventure being developed by Sky Gamblers and Radiation Island studio Atypical Games.
Set for release on PC and current-gen consoles sometime this year, Cubic Odyssey will feature "seamless ground, air, and space traversal", as well as a Minecraft-style cubic voxel aesthetic (hence the name). Imagine Minecraft crossed with No Man's Sky and you're most of the way there, it seems.
In Cubic Odyssey, you'll crashland on a distant planet, and you'll need to gather resources in order to craft yourself a base to help you survive, as well as a vehicle to potentially get you away from the planet and into the reaches of space.

According to Gaijin and Atypical, each star you see in the sky or in space "is the light of a star system", and each is orbited by planets "filled with life" that have "shifting day-night cycles" and fully explorable surfaces.
The story of the game involves you (and, optionally, your friends, since Cubic Odyssey also offers co-op play) putting a stop to a "spreading galactic infection" known only as the Red Darkness.
The two studios are promising the ability to essentially approach Cubic Odyssey however you like; you'll be able to take on "diverse quests" offered by a range of NPCs, explore "dangerous ruins" and "underground caves", and wander through "bustling NPC cities".
It sounds rather like Cubic Odyssey is aiming to try and offer what I think Bethesda's Starfield tried and failed to do. Whether it manages to succeed in this staggeringly ambitious endeavor remains to be seen, of course.
Gaijin founder Anton Yudintsev says the goal here is to "support the creativity of indie game developers". He says he and his team are "thrilled by the scope and ambition" of Cubic Odyssey.
For his part, meanwhile, Atypical CEO Andrei Lopata says the aim with the game is to "build a boundless open world" in which "every planet, every system, and every moment is yours to shape". Them's big promises, Andrei.
Cubic Odyssey is set to launch sometime in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
