The studio behind the revitalization of the Perfect Dark series, The Initiative, is one known to comprise numerous industry veterans. Some went so far as to call it an "AAAA" studio. Now, we're just learning that another studio with an incredibly pedigree is joining as co-developer: Crystal Dynamics.
Perfect Dark developer The Initiative took to Twitter today to announce that Crystal Dynamics is joining as a partner in developing the new title. Known for their work on the Tomb Raider series, and more recently, the controversial Marvel's Avengers, there is a lot of manpower behind this studio. Crystal Dynamics is also a subsidiary of Square Enix, which is makes for an intriguing collaboration.
On Twitter, The Initiative added this statement:
The teams couldn't pass up a chance to work together. We're still early in development, but incredibly excited to use this unique opportunity to deliver on the vision for Perfect Dark!
Crystal Dynamics responded on Twitter by expressing their excitement on working with The Initiative on this highly anticipated project. Overall, this partnership is surprising but not totally out of the blue. The studio head of The Initiative, Darrell Gallagher, formerly worked at Crystal Dynamics himself. One can speculate that he was able to leverage his relationship with his previous employer in order to make this partnership a reality.
The recency of this news means that Perfect Dark is still far off. The Initiative even acknowledges that development is still in early stages as Crystal Dynamics is brought on board. However, we have a teaser trailer giving us a brief glimpse at this new vision for Rare's old franchise when it was officially revealed last year. There's also a developer interview, but little else for now. For now, it's too far off to say when Perfect Dark will release.
With a new studio working in collaboration with The Initiative, there's a lot of work ahead, but the burden of developing a so-called "AAAA" will be all the more light with Crystal Dynamics helping.
