British studio Argonaut has announced a Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster, and as you might imagine given that it's making an announcement, Argonaut itself is being revived as well.
Describing itself as a "legendary studio known for bringing its pioneering 3D technology to a 2D gaming world" back in the 80s, Argonaut says it's making a return after "a 20-year hiatus", although "hiatus" seems a strange word to use given the studio closed its doors in the mid-2000s.
The studio goes on to say it's making a "grand comeback as a boutique publisher" and that it's got a "planned slate of classic Argonaut IP" in the works, starting with a remaster of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos.
According to a press release on the new official Argonaut website, the Croc remaster will come complete with "enhanced HD graphics", as well as "updated modern control mechanics". Hopefully, we can still play with the original's lovably janky tank controls.
It's not just Croc you're getting with this remaster, though; you're also getting access to the "Crocipedia", a repository of Croc development assets including design documents, concept art, and more. Honestly, that's a win for preservation however you slice it.
Here's hoping that this inspires a revival of Croc 2, which deserves to make a comeback. In the meantime, however, you can check out the reveal trailer for the Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster right here.
Croc is the latest in a string of platforming mascots from the late fifth console generation era to be revived for modern systems. He joins the likes of Kao the Kangaroo, Glover, and, of course, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon, although those revivals are a little further back.
We don't have a release date or a list of platforms for the remaster of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos yet, but Argonaut has said it's coming to "all the current consoles and PC" later this year. Stay tuned for more.
