The Crew: Wild Run Expansion Releases Today

The new expansion for Ivory Tower's huge open-world racing MMO called The Crew: Wild Run will be released today, adding a decent amount of new content to the game, as well as a complete graphics overhaul, bug fixes, and gameplay tweaks.

The Crew: Wild Run throws four new vehicle tuning specs into the mix. Players can now take part in drag races with the new dragsters class, slide around the corners with style in drift cars, and go cross country in the newly added monster trucks and go on a tour of the 50 states on a motorcycle.

The big new mode is called The Summit, a recurring event that will see players compete against each other in a wide variety of terrain types and disciplines in iconic places around the USA in order to qualify for the Monthly Summit Finale. Qualification will be done via two Summit Qualifier events each week for four weeks, after which certain players will be selected to compete in the finale. If you manage to qualify for the finale and if you manage to beat the other qualified players, you will get rewarded with an "exclusive new vehicle" that is otherwise impossible to get.

Other updates include a pretty dramatic graphical overhaul and a new dynamic weather system that will change your experience depending on the type of weather you're driving in. A lot of existing areas have also been redesigned to accommodate the new vehicle types. You will also be able to design your own race courses and challenge your friends in the new FreeDrive activities, as well as take part in new trials made specifically for the new vehicle types. Ivory Tower will also be updating the game with new trials, events, vehicles, specs and Summit rewards post launch.

While most of these features are exclusive to the people who buy the expansion, players who want to stick to the base game will also be able to enjoy the graphical update and the weather system. The expansion is not included in the season pass for the base game.

The Crew: Wild Run is out today for PS4, Xbox One, and PC as a digital download, and a physical version will be available in stores on the 19th. This expansion won't be coming to last-gen systems.

Quick Take

I've played a decent amount of the base game before I traded it in at a local game store, but the new features as well as the graphics overhaul make me sort of want to jump back in. The base game itself was a pretty poor racing games with fiddly physics, but the feeling you get while driving a 2-hour race through the US is something I've never experienced before. We'll see if the expansion delivers on what is promised.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
