A new Contra game will be available for Android and iOS in less than a month — it's time to get ready for Contra Returns, a new adventure featuring over 200 levels and a bunch of interesting game modes.

The Contra games got their start in arcades before being ported to PCs and the NES in the late 80s. You (and a friend, if you want) get to travel through side-scrolling levels firing machine guns and taking on aliens. It's a pretty straightforward game, and let's be real — there's no need to mess with a winning formula.

That's exactly why Konami has announced that a new Contra game is on the way. If you're hoping for some massively upgraded HD release coming to PC and consoles, however, you're going to be a bit disappointed — the next Contra game is coming to mobile devices.

Contra Returns was announced yesterday (via MGH) on the game's official Twitter account. Considering the lackluster revivals and ports over the years, one might be concerned about the quality; based on what we've seen, though, it looks like it lives up to the spirit of the originals.  This new game is being developed by Timi Studio Group, the same developer who created Pokemon UniteCall of Duty: MobileHonor of Kings, and other games as part of its work with Tencent.

The team behind the game also shared a short trailer to show things off. The game's iconic duo Bill and Lance will be showing up along with four other characters, all of whom will presumably be playable in this upcoming game.

When is the Contra Returns Release Date?

The Contra Returns release date is July 26, 2021. The game will be making its debut on iOS and Android as a free-to-play game featuring in-app purchases. For now, there's not much else to do but wait. You can pre-register to play Contra Returns on Google Play for Android devices and the App Store for iOS devices.

How do you think the new Contra game looks? Would you want to see a proper premium release of the Contra games again (that aren't Contra Hard Core)? Let us know in the comments below!
