RED ASH

Yesterday, Mighty No. 9 developer Comcept launched a Kickstarter for their new game, RED ASH - The Indelible Legend.  It is described as a "3D action adventure game with third person shooter elements",  and makes mentions of having RPG and open world concepts as well.  The story details in RED ASH are described as being an introduction that serves to lead into a bigger universe, with Comcept launching a separate Kickstarter for an animated project set in the game's universe, Red Ash -Magicicada-, with a modest goal of $150,000 and being developed by Studio 4°C, who have done work on known anime films like Steamboy, and games such as Street Fighter IV, Catherine, and Asura's Wrath.

Given that Mighty No. 9 is still a couple months from its slated September worldwide release, launching a new Kickstarter this quickly and this ambitious would indicate that Comcept has no intention of playing the wait-and-see game when it comes to future projects.  RED ASH has a fundraising goal of $800k, which is $100k less than Mighty No. 9's original Kickstarter goal, and seems a little on the short side considering they are going full 3D and promising an open world environment in RED ASH.

However, Mighty No. 9 did fly monumentally past its original goal to raise just over $4 million after PayPal contributions, and considering that just on RED ASH's second day of fundraising they have raised over a quarter of their goal, Comcept is undoubtedly expecting this game's funding contributions to go well past it, so much so that the initial goal only details creating 3 chapters of the introductory scenario called "The KalKanon Incident", and additional chapters and content leaning heavily on the funding beyond the asking $800k.  As of now, the only listed stretch goal is achieved at $1.3 million, which adds the next two chapters of "The KalKanon Incident" as well as a new playable location.

Comcept is also re-using the names of characters from Mighty No. 9, with the main protagonist and female supporting characters being named, once again, Beck and Call, but with different design.  However, this game adds a new character, Tyger, who seems to be a partner/mentor for the young Beck, and Call is placed in a supporting role for Beck, designing and building his upgrades.  Some of the more detailed game mechanics tell of interacting with NPCs and going dungeon diving, adding to the RPG aspects of RED ASH.

Comcept seems confident in their new universe, and given the speed at which they are currently receiving donations for both their RED ASH game and accompanying anime, it would seem that the PR disaster involving a former hostile Community Manager hasn't done much harm to their ability to bank on the loyalty of Mega Man fans to its creators.
