Positech Games, developers of Gratuitous Space Battles and Production Line, have announced a brand-new game in their longest-running franchise according to a blog post on their websiteDemocracy 4.

If you haven't yet had the pleasure of playing any of the Democracy games, well... they're not for the faint of heart. What seems like a simple title at first glance is actually a seriously in-depth political simulator where one mistake can cost you the wellbeing of your country or even your own life - much like the real world, pissing off too many of your citizens is a fast track to getting assassinated.

Unlike the previous title, Cliff "Cliffski" Harris will be stepping back for the development of Democracy 4 after having wrapped up the last few post-launch bugfixes and enhancements on the previous game in the series. Development and design will be headed up by Jeff Sheen from Stargazy Studios, the man behind Democracy 3: Africa and a contributor to the Unicode port of the game which added the capability for Russian and Chinese translations. Mr. Harris will be acting as a producer while lending his assistance with design and testing where needed.

Without mentioning any specific examples, things have certainly been shaken up in the political world in the last few years. It's been nearly five years since the initial release of Democracy 3 and the newest game in the franchise will have a focus on more modern political issues like fake news, social media, corruption, and limits to press freedom. Many of the mechanics first introduced in the expansions will be integrated into the core game where it makes sense to do so. As Harris delicately put it, "Democracy 3 was released in 2013 and…quite a lot has happened in global politics since then, which we hope to reflect in the new version."

Democracy 4 is still pretty early in development with a tentative release date of "sometime in 2019". In the meantime, you can pick up the latest available version Democracy 3 on Steam, the Humble Store, or GOG for $24.99 or your regional equivalent. If you find that you like the game, there's also a healthy amount of DLC to expand your political experience. More details about Democracy 4 will be out in the coming months.
