Today, after running a stream for 24 hours showing increasingly stormy weather, Firaxis announced the second expansion for Civilization VI and will officially release Civilization VI: Gathering Storm in 2019.

Coming February 14, 2019, Civilization VI: Gathering Storm will add a new living world ecosystem that includes all sorts of new natural events including natural disasters or other aspects of climate change. Beyond various direct weather events, Gathering Storm has various other aspects tied into ecology including a new era for the Technology and Civics trees which adds elements for fighting climate change among many other aspects. One addition that further complements this is strategic resources being expended by power plants with things like coal and oil while you can later unlock renewable energy sources and how you choose to use them will impact things later in the game like temperature, melting ice caps and rising sea levels.

Civilization VI: Gathering Storm isn't just about nature though, as it will also add eight new civilizations, nine new world leaders and various other aspects. New districts are getting added for transportation methods - most notably canals, but also dams and that there are new ways to create mountain tunnels and railroads. One of the biggest additions that fans have requested for Civilization VI is the World Congress which will be coming in The Gathering Storm and adds a (much needed) diplomatic victory option.

There will also be two new scenarios coming with Civilization VI. The first is based on The Black Death and you have to try and lead your nation through that plague torn era that killed so many. A second one is War Machine, based on the German Imperial Army's plan at the start of World War 1 to invade Belgium and quickly rush Paris to knock France out of the war. In this scenario, you take on either Germany or France and either attempt to quickly rush through to capture the enemy or fight off the incoming invasion.

Other new aspects mentioned in the post include seven new world wonders, seven natural wonders, 18 units, 15 new improvements, 9 new buildings, 5 new districts, an enhanced espionage system and numerous updates to other systems.
