Google has announced a Chrome OS Steam Alpha for select Chromebooks. Unfortunately, details on this surprising new announcement do not yet appear to be publicly available.

You're probably well familiar with Steam if you play games on PC. Valve has been busy with the launch of its Steam Deck handheld gaming PCworking on increasing production and adding more support for Windows 10. Apparently, this device isn't the only new place you'll be able to play your Steam games -- Google has just announced that Steam is finally coming to Chrome OS, too.

The Chrome OS Steam Alpha is Missing in Action

The Chrome OS Steam Alpha was announced by Google for Games Product Director Greg Hartell in the Google for Games Developer Summit 2022 Keynote earlier today as highlighted by Ars Technica writer Ron Amadeo on Twitter.

"For example, the Steam Alpha just launched, making this longtime PC game store available on select Chromebooks for users to try," Hartell said. "You can check that out on the Chromebook community forum to learn more."

Seems interesting, right? There's just one tiny problem -- as 9to5Google reports, there is no post about the Chrome OS Steam alpha on the Chromebook community forum just yet. Presumably, more details will be arriving whenever that post goes live.

Google has all sorts of projects in the works at any one time, so it should come as no surprise that Chrome OS Steam support was first reported on over two years ago over at Android Police. No timeline for the project was provided and there haven't been any apparent developments on the project until today.

Do keep in mind, however, that the Chrome OS Steam alpha isn't going to be coming to every single Chromebook or device that runs Chrome OS. As Greg Hartell noted, it is coming to "select Chromebooks," although he did not specify which models would be able to actually use Steam. We'll keep an eye on this one and update this story as more details come to light.
