September is a tough game for smaller games to release, as the Fall AAA release season is starting to roll out. However, that hasn't stopped Dead Mage and 11 bit's Children of Morta from coming out to critical acclaim, and financial success as the Children of Morta sales are doing extremely well.

In a press release sent out, since its release on September 3 on PC, Children of Morta has already recouped the development costs for both developer Dead Mage and publisher 11 bit studios. Before this, 11 bit had published (in Polish) on their investor relation site that Children of Morta sales income had significantly exceeded costs the publisher incurred creating and publishing the title. Using Jake Birkett's method of estimating sales based on reviews we can estimate that the title has sold probably around 65 000 copies through Steam alone (note this is an estimate and a rough one). Children of Morta is also available with a Steam key through Humble Bundle and on GOG, neither of which count in this estimate.

For those who liked the game, like our own Robert N. Adams who gave it a 9 out of 10, this is clearly great news as the game is breaking through the difficult noise in the indie market, especially on Steam. Children of Morta is also still going to be coming to consoles next month with Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch launches coming October 15th, including a retail release.

What is Children of Morta?

Children of Morta is a mixture of action RPG, and roguelite gameplay without permadeath. Instead, you slowly improve the entire Bergon family with upgrades and play as different members of a family in the procedurally generated dungeons. With local co-op (and online co-op on the way) you battle corruption through 3 different lands learning more about the trials and tribulations of the Bergon's and the world around them.

There are six main members of the family, who are all playable that we've covered more in-depth previously if you want to learn who might be your pick. Alternatively, if you want to learn more about Children of Morta's art or gameplay check out our features on those. Lastly, 11 bit studios and Dead Mage released a video with 11 facts about Children of Morta that you can check out below for a quick primer about the game.
