Pokemon Evolved ARK Mod

Correction: We originally noted that the mod in question was ARKMon and had several mistaken facts included regarding it. We have corrected these below and in the title.

Earlier this month, Steam modder Mystic Academy uploaded an ARK: Survival Evolved mod that lets you tame Pokémon in place of the usual dinos. After a few days, the Pokémon Evolved mod was in danger of being pulled from the Steam Workshop due to a DCMA takedown notice being filed with Steam. It was recently learned that this takedown notice was filed by a different modder and not an entity that holds a copyright on the Pokémon intellectual property.

Strangely, the modder who filed the claim is apparently working on their own Pokémon mod for ARK, or is at least somehow involved with a competing mod. For now, the copyright infringement notice does not appear on the mod’s page, so it seems as though that claim has been cleared up. How long it will be before Nintendo or anyone else with a share of the Pokémon IP files a more substantial claim is anybody’s guess.

Nintendo has definitely been protecting its pokémon property of late, shutting down a rom hack of Pokémon Crystal (dubbed Pokémon Prism) at the end of last year, and closing the doors on another fan project, Pokémon Uranium, a few months earlier. It seems unlikely that the Pokémon Evolved mod will go unnoticed.

The mod is available on a significant number of servers, so you can go explore a world filled with your favorite critters--and kill them to collect credits. The credits are the mod's currency, used to summon pokémon as well as to craft objects typically crafted with resources in ARK. To date, the mod has reviewed well on Steam, and seems to be a bit more popular than the rival mod, ARKMon.

Have you tried catching some pokémon in ARK yet? What did you think of the mod and do you think it will stick around long on the Steam Workshop?
