Call of Duty: Modern Warfare loot boxes won't be a thing according to a statement from one of the game's developers. Fan speculation on the monetization model of the next game in the Modern Warfare franchise was all but certain that Supply Drops (or something similar) would be making its way into this game, but a developer has popped onto Reddit to categorically deny this.

As Eurogamer reports, Infinity Ward's Studio Art Director Joel Emslie has popped onto the /r/ModernWarfare subreddit with a submission detailing the company's near-future plans for loot boxes. If you're not fond of them, there's some pretty good news.

"Sigh. There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare," Mr. Emslie stated. "What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system."

"Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY," he continued. "Stay tuned, we're planning to release info this week."

But Will There Be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Loot Boxes?

A careful reading of Mr. Emslie's statement on the franchise's subreddit will reveal a loophole big enough to fly an AC-130 gunship through: Mr. Emslie said that they are not working on a supple drop or loot box system right now.

Considering the time that's involved in spinning up any kind of microtransactions scheme, the odds are good that we're not going to be getting anything like that launch. Black Ops 4 players, however, can tell you just how big the loot box system is in that game, and it seems a bit odd that Infinity Ward and Activision would pass it up entirely.

The odds are pretty darn good that we won't be getting any kind of loot boxes for the game's launch. The future, however, may be an entirely different story. David Vonderhaar had done an interview prior to the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 where he said that Blackout characters would be unlocked via gameplay; that subsequently changed after release. He later explained that that was part of the "business side of things", something that most of the dev team has no control over.

As far as one dev says, there won't be any Call of Duty: Modern Warfare loot boxes. Whether the business folks decide to side with the development folks on that one is something that only time will tell.

Do you think Call of Duty: Modern Warfare loot boxes will eventually launch at a later date or do you think that Infinity Ward will eschew them entirely for this game? What do you think of the developer's statement? Let us know in the comments below!
