Borderlands Online is no more.

Take-Two Interactive has shut down the Borderlands Online MMO, as well as the studio developing it, 2K China. The studio, located in Shanghai, closed its doors around November 6th, letting go the 150 member team working on the MMO.

According to a Take-Two spokesperson, the reason for shutting down the studio and the game was all business, "We determined that the additional time required to finish current projects at the studio, particularly Borderlands Online, would not yield a favorable return on investment."

Borderlands Online would have been the first MMO based on the acclaimed multiplayer RPG-series, and was made specifically for Asian markets. The game would have been a Free-to-Play title with four character classes available at launch, and tons of guns and ammo drops promised to boot.  It was also closely rendered in the graphical style of the Borderlands series, and included several voice-over quips from the english voice-actors.

Borderlands Online was planned to be released this year in China. The video below showcases what Borderlands Online would have looked like.

Take-Two is not, however, giving up on the Asian market so easily, "We are excited about the opportunities to expand our business in Asia." stated Take-Two," And we remain committed to delivering triple-A offerings for that region."

Currently, Take-Two interactive has an office based in Singapore, the NBA 2K Online team (also based in Shanghai) and their testing facility in Chengdu, China. None of these facilities have suffered closure. Take-Two is also offering to help out staff let go from 2K China, "We are working with affected staff to identify other opportunities within the company where possible," the statement claims.

So what do you think? Is this a good cancellation in the end? You think Take-Two will try to bring back Borderlands Online at all? Leave your comments below.
