Blizzard Shares New Lore, Teasing New Hero?

Not content with letting their fanbase rest, Blizzard has started to tease a new hero rather quickly after the start of the game's 1 year anniversary event. True to form, the reveal of the new hero will be predated by an undetermined number of hints about what the thing they're announcing actually is, since the released bits of info don't specify whether this is a new hero, new map. While the latter is a possibility, it's somewhat safe to assume that it'll be a new character (more on that later). Blizzard has also opened a page on the official Overwatch website that contains quite a bit of lore!

At a press conference today, Lucheng Interstellar revealed the surprising fact that the colony's databases and monitoring systems are still up and running this day. While no direct communication has been established with the facility, the company has successfully retrieved interpersonnel logs sent days and moments before the base lost contact with earth. Below are some of the transmissions Lucheng shared.
The colony in question is a remnant of what remains of the colony founded by the Lucheng Corporation on the earth's moon. This colony is where everyone's favorite monkey/scientist Winston comes from, and is the location of a calamitous event that saw the genetically modified and intelligent gorillas being tested their rise up against their human captors. The colony also features in flashbacks in the 'Recall' animated short released close to the game's release date.

The bits of lore released mainly concern an email correspondence between two employees in the colony, one of which is the scientist Winston gets his name from. This correspondence reveals the difficulty the colony's security detail has had in controlling the intelligent primates, resulting in some of the gorillas being confined to quarters.

Here's the full exchange:

Here's why I think it's likely that we're getting a new hero:

Overwatch 6

Of all the test subjects accounted for, two names are missing: Winston and Hammond. Hammond is one of the earlier specimens and, according to the emails, he disappeared just like Winston was. Another thing to note is that one of the emails points out that Hammond is a smaller test subject, so it it is most likely not a gorilla like Winston is.

So, what do you think of the info we got? What are you hoping for? Let us know in the comment section below!

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
