Blizzard now seems to think of Diablo III as a "classic" game. It joins the illustrious likes of Starcraft and Warcraft III in this category.

The classification comes as part of a job listing on Blizzard's website for a Senior Software Engineer (thanks, BattleChat). In the listing, Blizzard says it wants "a hero" to evolve and carry its classic games into the future. Responsibilities for the role include "driving feature implementation from planning to completion for StarcraftWarcraft III, and Diablo III". Blizzard says that advances in technology have made it more difficult to play these games, so a skilled engineer is needed to keep them alive.

We're not sure exactly what this will mean for Diablo III. Blizzard hasn't officially announced a shift in policy towards the game, so if you're a Diablo III player it looks like you can rest easy for now. BattleChat reckons this could mean a new Diablo game is on the way; if Blizzard is shifting resources from the current team to the classic team, that frees up staff members to work on a potential Diablo IV. With BlizzCon 2019 just around the corner, an announcement could well be on the way. We'll have to wait and see.

Diablo III originally launched in 2012 for PC. Like the previous titles in the series, the game is an action RPG that pits you against Diablo, the Lord of Terror. Since its initial release, Diablo III has also been released on PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The last we heard of Diablo was at last year's BlizzCon, where the mobile game Diablo Immortal didn't do so well. It's definitely likely that Blizzard will be looking to restore the franchise's reputation with a true blue sequel. Watch this space for more news.
