Crowdfunding platform Indiegogo yesterday announced that funding has openend for the first ever music album created as a videogame. The Birdcage is a concept rock album with a twist - it will be presented entirely in video game format.

The ambitious project will be tackled in a collaborative effort, with several rock legends lending their talents to the game. This includes members from bands such as Guns N’ Roses, Evanescence, Within Temptation, and Alice Cooper.

The Birdcage will be a “modern rock re-creation” of the classic fairytale, The Beauty and the Beast. The music is set to be the driving force behind the story instead of the other way around, although it remains to be seen how this will be accomplished.

The decision to employ musical talent towards the creation of a video game was explained by Arnold Nesis, music producer for the game.

“Albums don’t sell like they used to, so how do we create music that we want to make while also avoiding the starving artist label? We believe that we have found a way to change the music industry by combining the haunting heart racing sound of an album created by the best rock artists in the world [...]"
According to Nesis, Birdcage will combine the electrifying sounds of a rock masterpeice with the immersive environments, storylines, and interactivity of modern video games. This “truly unique and industry changing product” has a tentative release date of February 2015, and definitely sounds like something both gamers and music lovers should keep an eye on.

Those interested in seeing what exactly a “video game rock album” will be like can help fund the Indiegogo campaign here. Rewards, including Birdcage loot, actual instruments, and even the opportunity to become part of the team are all up for grabs.
