It's been about a year since The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth made its debut and greatly expanded on the item and enemy variety of the base Rebirth experience. At the time, many thought that this was the last hurrah for Isaac, and that the community would carry on the torch from there. Those people were half right, as the release of Afterbirth+ this coming January on PC will make that process a whole lot easier.

Afterbirth+ features a lot of the things you'd expect from an Isaac expansion at this point. It extends the game with an additional chapter and a new final boss, as well as a new character to conquer them with. It has over sixty new items, several new transformations, 100s of new room layouts, new foes, new variants of existing foes, new tweaks to Greed Mode, and much more. That's all to be expected from one of the most complex roguelites out on the market.

What is new and potentially very exciting is the mod tools. Afterbirth+ will come with a full modding suite that will allow players to take advantage of the community's existing passion for grafting new content onto The Binding of  Isaac. Perhaps even more excitingly, Afterbirth+ will also allow the game's developers to pick the best of the best from the modding community and place it into the game proper. This means that Issac will only be getting bigger in 2017, with constant updates similar in scope to those seen in Halo 5 and the salad days of Team Fortress 2.

You can grab the latest Isaac expansion starting on January 3rd for $10 on Steam. For owners of the original Afterbirth, there will be a temporary launch discount that brings the game down to $6.66. The update will also be coming to console players at a later date.

Are you still grinding away at the basements of Isaac? What roguelikes are you looking forward to in 2017? Can anything top Isaac at this point? Answer these questions in the comments below!
