DICE announced via a blog update that they're cancelling the originally planned competitive 5v5 mode for Battlefield V. The cancellation comes across as a manpower issue since they cited needing to focus on other content goals and bug fixing.

The blog update was written by DICE's senior producer, Ryan McArthur. His full statement from the post on the competitive mode is below,

"The added focus on improving the quality of the experience and adding more of the content you want has led us to step back from our original plans to offer a competitive 5v5 mode. Not creating this mode was a tough decision, but vital for us to more quickly reach our bug-crushing and content goals. However, we will still pursue building a competitive gaming experience in Battlefield™. We know that there’s already an existing competitive scene in our community, and we’re helping build features to support these communities. We want to work more closely with our players to help improve the tools that they have available to shape their play experience. This way, we can better support the places where competitive Battlefield V play already exists."
McArthur points out their intent to still support the competitive scene around Battlefield V, despite not moving forward with the mode. In the meantime, the rest of the blog post discusses other content coming such as the Provence and Lofoten Islands in the 4.4 update. McArthur mentioned certain members of the media are getting a first look at these maps during Gamescom.

Another major change coming in the 4.4 update is an increase in max rank from the current 50 to 500. A community manager at DICE spoke further about the rank change two months ago in the Battlefield V subreddit. The concept art shown in the thread about the max rank increase shows 15 rank icons and 10 unlockable dog tags.
