World War 1 to this day remains one of the most brutal and complex wars in the modern age, with a ton of different factors influencing this war, and the (arguably more famous) war that came after it.

It's because of this complexity and the width and breadth of World War 1's theater of war that Battlefield 1's story campaign will be a series of short stories instead of one major arc with one set of characters.

According to a blog post on the official Battlefield website, the game's main campaign has been given the title 'War Stories' and will focus on several characters spread out across the frontlines of the war.

DICE hopes to be able to give a more diverse look of a war that nearly decimated an entire generation. Battlefield 1's campaign is more about the people fighting in the war than the war itself.

The Great War is diverse. We knew we wanted to embrace that variety. There were so many different perspectives and characters in World War 1 and we wanted to cover as much ground as possible.

For Battlefield 1, DICE is using an anthology format to tell the game's story. This means that you'll be playing as a bunch of different soldiers in completely different situations.

One example is the War Story Through Mud and Blood. It takes place late in the war and centers on a British Mark V Tank crew.
The story focuses on a young soldier assigned to the crew as the tank’s driver. However, our protagonist has no experience of these modern war vehicles and needs to learn – and learn fast.

According to the blog post, DICE's approach to the singleplayer campaign is influenced by how players interact in the franchise's multiplayer portion in every Battlefield game.

The post cites the minute-to-minute decisions you and your squad have to make in an online match and will require you to quickly adapt to the unpredictable situation on the battlefield.

For instance, in the aforementioned Through Mud and Blood there is a part we call The Fog of War.  Here you suddenly find yourself in a misty forest.
Due to the low visibility you’re moving ahead of your tank on foot, clearing camps of enemies. If you like, you can use explosives to blow up the enemies’ anti-tank weapons, or you can sneak up and do melee attacks.

This approach to mission structure will allow players to tackle objectives how they see if, instead of following a linear path from the start of a mission to the end.

The campaign also introduces you to several important historical figures like Lawrence of Arabia and The Red Baron as you fight alongside them.

Battlefield 1 is scheduled to release on October 21 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Quick Take

DICE have the opportunity here to give us an honest look at one of the most brutal events in recent memory and it seems to me that they're fully planning on doing the memory of the war justice.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
