Baldur's Gate Enhanced Delayed On Consoles Along With Other BeamDog Titles

Published: October 27, 2019 4:48 PM

Beamdog has announced that their enhanced editions of Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment, and Icewind Dale for consoles have been delayed until October 15. Already available on PC and mobile, they will be coming to PS4, Xbox One, and Switch on that date. This is a slight delay from the original early October release initially planned.

If you’re not familiar with these classics, they originally released for the PC in the late 90s and 2000, and were developed by famed studios such as Bioware, Black Isle, and Interplay. Near two decades later, they have remained CRPG masterpieces. They were not remastered until 2013, when Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition released, which was followed by enhanced versions of Icewind Dale in 2014 and Planescape: Torment in 2017. Each of them was enhanced by Beamdog.

The enhanced editions make the games far more playable for current gamers. Gamers today may be put off by the Advanced D&D rules Baldur’s Gate holds to, for instance. That’s where features like Story mode come in handy, which can be turned on and off and makes the difficulty very easy. Improvement-of-life options include a slider for the font size, an option to scale the user interface, and widescreen support.

There will be a Baldur's Gate pack, with the original BG and its sequel, and a Planescape: Torment / Icewind Dale pack.

There were fan-made mods that also added similar features to the Infinity Engine games, but Beamdog’s enhanced versions come with the benefit of a convenient purchase and setup. Plus, if you already own the originals on PC and have held off on getting the enhanced versions, the upcoming Switch version will likely be the preferable mobile version over playing it on iOS or Android.

If you've never played one of these titles, these versions could serve as solid preparation for the upcoming Baldur's Gate III. You'll also have the chance to play the original Planescape: Torment before checking out the spiritual followup, if you haven't already. The Planescape: Torment EnhancedIcewind Dale Enhanced and Baldur's Gate Enhanced delay means you'll be able to pick these titles up on console on October 15... assuming there isn't another delay.

Quick Take

As someone who typically enjoys finding and using mods to get older PC games running on newer hardware, I liked the convenience of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and the excuse it gave me to dive back into that world. Playing it on Switch sounds like a treat.
