Baldur's Gate 3 is still targeting a 2020 release date, but when that date might be is a little more uncertain.
Belgium-based Larian Studios has followed suit with many of their contemporaries by instituting a work-from-home policy. Unfortunately, things seem to be slowing down as the complications of remote work become evident.
"The very first week, it went really well,” Larian's Founder Swen Vincke said to The New York Times. "Everyone had all the information they needed to just smoothly go work from home."
As time went on, however, problems began to emerge. These problems needed sorting out which meant that more time was spent talking to one another than actually working on Baldur's Gate 3.
"We started seeing more stress on the leads in terms of communication," Mr. Vincke continued. "We’d spend all of our days just communicating — trying to solve problems, organize things, give direction."
What's the Fate of Baldur's Gate 3?
Considering the difficulties of working from home, one might be in doubt about the Baldur's Gate 3 release date. Larian, however, believes that they can still get it out the door before the end of the year.
"Development is proceeding," Mr. Vincke stated simply. "We’re just slowed down."
It should be noted that Larian has not yet actually revealed a release date for the game just yet. While any sort of delay is unfortunate, we really don't know how much longer we would be waiting.
Currently, the company estimates that it's operating at 70–80% of its normal productivity under their current remote work scheme. While that may be distressing, Larian is still confident that it can get an early access beta release up on Steam sometime in 2020. For now, you can add Baldur's Gate 3 to your wishlist on Steam.
