Indie developer Takaaki Ichijo is making a classic Playstation era survival horror game rendered in the blocky pixelated Playstation one style. Back in 1995 will be releasing on Steam April 28th featuring zero anti-aliasing, blown-up textures, and blocky characters that look very reminiscent of the original Silent Hill. Ichijo says that Back in 1995 is a labor of love that looks to recreate some of his first gaming experiences on the Sega Saturn and the original Playstation. The Steam page says you will, "be transported to a world both concrete and indistinct, where you must uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of your daughter, the catastrophe that shook the city, and why you’ve decided to finally return."

Ichijo says on the Back in 1995 website "Here in 2015, some might think it’s still too early to label those games “retro.” Yet many fans around 25-35 years of age feel something about those stylistic graphics strangely nostalgic, and appealing." He also states that the reason he wants to visit these aesthetics is because he wants to relive the exciting times of seeing early video game graphics develop and grow. Back in 1995 will recreate the lo-fi aesthetic with low res models, texture warping, CRT emulation, and fixed CCTV style camera angles. The Steam page for Back in 1995 also recommends a controller with a decent D-pad which means it's likely that you will move using the D-pad in the game much like you would with a pre-Dualshock controller.

Quick Take

Many games these days look for a "retro" aesthetic but use a lot of modern polish to touch up the designs but Back in 1995 is going whole hog and trying to look entirely like an early PSOne game. Of all the eras to emulate the PSOne era graphics really do not hold up well. However Survival Horror is one of the few retro genres not to be really revived and it's one of my favorites so I'm certainly looking forward to it.
