Deck13 and Focus Interactive have unveiled the first Atlas Fallen gameplay trailer, giving us a look at what we can expect from this desert action RPG when it launches in May. The trailer shows off traversal, combat, and the game's breathtaking semi-open world, among other things.

Earlier this month, Deck13 revealed that Atlas Fallen will be launching on May 16th. Ahead of that release date, the game's first gameplay trailer hints at its story before showing off gameplay, with a sinister voice intoning that the player "should have stayed in line" and that it is "the order of this world". Spooky.

It's not just the trailer, though. A PlayStation Blog post also goes into more detail about Atlas Fallen and its world. According to the post, the world of the game is made up of Essence, a force that was once used to shape magic. The art of doing so has been lost, but one day, you come across a gauntlet which must be reforged in order to restore magic to the land.

You can check out the new Atlas Fallen gameplay trailer here.

In gameplay terms, Atlas Fallen has more than a hint of Darksiders' chunky melee combat and semi-open world traversal about it, mixed in with a dash of the 2008 Prince of Persia reboot. We see epic landscapes along which the player slides in the sand, as well as huge creatures that look pretty imposing.

The trailer shows off a variety of weaponry that you can use to battle your enemies, and the PlayStation Blog post provides more information on your equipment and how you can use it. Your arsenal includes the heavy Dunecleaver, the quick Sandwhip, and the brutal Knuckledust, and you'll be able to choose between two of these weapons on the fly, allowing you to create your very own loadout.

To further the Darksiders and Zelda comparisons, you'll also have access to traversal abilities. These include an air dash, which propels you forward through the air, as well as the ability to Raise structures buried beneath the sand. You can also Crush seals and chains to access new areas. All in all, if you're a Darksiders fan, it looks like you'll dig this game too.

Atlas Fallen is scheduled for launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on May 16th.
