Ubisoft has recently revealed that Assassin's Creed Odyssey will feature two primary ways to play: Guided mode and Exploration mode.

Guided mode will be presented as a traditional open world game. Quest markers will automatically appear to the player and direct them on where to go and what to do. They will be shown at all times, too. Exploration mode, on the other hand, will require players to investigate the environment to uncover quest objectives and targets.

Players will choose which mode they wish to play before they start. Ubisoft hasn't specified whether players will be able to switch between these modes at will, however, but we're hoping they will allow that option.

Exploration mode sounds interesting, but it could be difficult to maintain. The worlds of these games are pretty huge (Origins was enormous) and so getting around them without guidance could be quite a struggle. This new mode seems to address concerns that the map of these games (and other Ubisoft titles) have become too much of a soulless checklist. It'll be interesting to see how well this works.

Check out the most recent trailer below which talks about the power of choice in Assassin's Creed Odyssey - rather fitting given the choices players will make in how they want to play.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches October 5th on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Quick Take

The idea of Exploration mode certainly sounds interesting. An open world game that actually encourages you to explore rather than mindlessly follow quest markers is a cool idea. Hopefully, the game will offer plenty of useful pointers in its new dialogue system. An interesting experiment that I'll be curious to try, but I'm afraid I might just end up defaulting to the safer Guided mode.

What do you think about these new modes? Will you be checking out the Exploration mode, or will you stick with the more traditional Guided mode? Let us know in the comments below!
