The rumors are true. Assassins Creed Mirage, Ubisoft's return to classic open-world stealth action gameplay has had its latest trailer revealed during this year's PlayStation Showcase. And there isn't a single RPG element in sight.
The Assassins Creed Mirage trailer
The Assassins Creed Mirage trailer puts its gameplay center stage. For those that have played earlier titles in the franchise, it is gameplay that will look quite familiar with an emphasis on climbing, sneaking, air assassinations, and parkour. The trailer even shows several close calls with the main character getting away with the use of smoke bombs. There also appear to be some new flourishes such as power slides, area of effect special attacks, and even a fancy slow-mo spinning slash.
Assassins Creed Mirage is the thirteenth main installment in Ubisoft's iconic series. It is set in 9th-century Bagdad during the Islamic Golden Age. You play as Basim Ibn Ishaq, a street thief that slowly becomes a member of the secret Assassin Brotherhood, sworn to fight for peace and liberty against the secretive and oppressive Templar Order.
This return to classic gameplay is notable for Assassins Creed Mirage. The series abandoned this stealth action approach with the release of Assassins Creed Syndicate in 2015. This caused the franchise to adopt a more action-RPG approach with Assassins Creed: Origins, Assassins Creed Odyssey, and Assassins Creed Valhalla.
While these entries did provide hundreds of hours of gameplay along with rewarding gameplay, for a certain group of fans it was too much of a departure for the series' historical fantasy assassination routes. So for Mirage's gameplay to emphasize the troubles of infiltrating an area and taking out a target without seeing a single piece of customizable gear of damage numbers popping up in a scrap is a breath of fresh air.
Assassins Creed Mirage will be available October 12.
