The Ascent, a solo and co-op action RPG set in a cyberpunk world developed by Neon Giant, was announced at Xbox's Inside Xbox Conference today.
The game will feature players struggling against The Ascent Group, a "self-contained metropolis" that owns both the player and everyone else... until it collapses into nothingness. The player is now struggling to survive without the corporation, with visuals that remind the viewer of Blade Runner, although this is a type of game that probably won't make the viewer think too much. Just get awesome loot and blow things up. Nothing wrong with that.
The game is described as Diablo meets Judge Dredd, which seems like a... particularly app description for the game. Players will have to help their district survive by stopping rival corporations and crime syndications from scooping up their district "by any means necessary." There will be other districts to explore as well, which can range from slums to place of high luxury. Players can customize their bodies with cyberware gear, and the entire game can be played either solo or with up to four players in local or online co-op.
The game begins with the player's city going haywrie as the automated security systems go crazy with the Ascent Group shutting down. There will be riots, rival factions, and conspiracy theories that spread rapidly and must be solved before its too late for the player's planet.
Apparently every gunfight will have some similarity to The Matrix's lobby scene, with every gunfight "leaving its mark" on environments, whether its a pillar or a crumbling building.
