The long-rumored Armored Mewtwo is finally making its comeback.

It was announced with a new trailer yesterday that Armored Mewtwo will be added as a temporary raid boss in Pokemon GO. This limited time special event will take place for the rest of the month, from July 10th to July 31st.

The trailer shows off a slick CG cinematic of the popular psychic Pokemon gearing up in a stylized version of his now classic Armor look, first seen in the Pokemon Anime way back in 1997, then subsequently Pokemon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back in 1998.

Pokemon: The First Movie is being remade as Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, and it will be the first full CGI movie in the Pokemon franchise. Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution is scheduled for release on July 12th, so it is likely that Armored Mewtwo is being used in Pokemon GO as a promotional bonus for players.

There has been wide speculation that Armored Mewtwo might make an appearance in the next Pokemon games as well, Pokemon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch. Most of that speculation stems from a trademark filed back in March for the Armored Mewtwo name, as well as long-standing rumors of 'armored Pokemon' in Sword and Shield to tie into the England-like setting of the games Galar region. These rumors have not been proven to be credible at this time.

Players can start fighting and capturing the Armored Mewtwo in Pokemon GO on July 10th.

Quick Take

I am kind of doubting that Armored Mewtwo will make an appearance in Sword and Shield, although I would not rule out the possibility as a little bonus for fans of the franchise. Considering Armored Mewtwo has had a following of its own since the late 1990s it's not surprising now, with a CG remake of the first movie only a week away, that we see a bit of promotion from Niantic and The Pokemon Company. In all likelihood, the trademark was specifically for Niantic in this case to use the name.

What do you think though? Will Armored Mewtwo only be for Pokemon GO? Leave your comments below.
