ARK: Survival Evolved is currently having a free weekend on Steam according to a press release. The game is also on sale for 50% off. The free weekend and sale coincide with the Patch 245 update to the game. This update has a trailer showcasing some of the new features:
The first portion of the Patch 245 update is the Primitive+ Functionality mod. It removes the higher-end equipment in the game and keeps the technology level closer to the Caveman era. You can only use tools made of wood and stone. The mod doesn't just remove the higher tier items - it also tweaks the gameplay mechanics to suit this different playstyle.
Two new creatures are being added to ARK: Survival Evolved with this update. The Pelagornis is a versatile flying creature that acts as a jack of all trades. One of its tradeoffs is that it's unable to grab creatures with its feet while airborne.
The other creature is the Allosaurus. Allosaurus look visually similar to the Tyrannosaurus Rex but a good degree smaller. They tend to roam in packs of three, and packs that meet up in the game will merge into larger packs.
There are a few other changes that are included as part of Patch 245. Fishing has been added as a new activity in the game. Fishing is mechanically similar to its implementation in many other games. Craft a fishing pole, apply bait, and fish in water. There's also the opportunity to dredge up random junk, and a post on the game's Steam Community forums suggests that fishing may currently be erroneously dropping high-level Blueprints.
A spiral staircase structure has been added, and the new Industrial Grinder will allow you to convert items into a portion of the resources that go into their creation. Building Attack & Destruction is now tracked via TribeLogs, and servers now have the optional ability to allow hit markers for ranged attacks.
If you're interested in checking out Ark: Survival Evolved you have until Sunday to play it for free on Steam. The 50% discount will continue past the weekend until August 3, 2016.
