C.J. and Flick are new additions to Animal Crossing: New Horizons and they've been warmly welcomed by the playerbase, partially because they pay 150% for fish and bugs, respectively. There was also the insinuation that these two male characters may have been in a relationship, but the game's Official Companion Guide has just sunk that ship for good.

The short of it is this: both characters refer to one another as "partners." While somewhat vague, some have interpreted this to mean that they are romantic partners as evidenced by discussions like this one on Reddit.

This idea has gained a measure of popularity, partly because there is a segment of any fandom that likes to make up all sorts of romantic pairings. Unfortunately for them, the Official Companion Guide clarifies the relationship between the two.

What New Horizons' Official Companion Guide Says About C.J. and Flick

Here's what the game's Official Companion Guide reportedly has to say about the pair of fauna enthusiasts from Nintendo's newest game:

Did You Know?
Flick and C.J. are roommates and business partners. As an artist, he helps C.J. build his streaming audience by providing stellar art to dedicated anglers. However, Flick's true artistic muse is the world of entomology.

And there you have it. While they aren't "roommates" in the sense that some people might have thought, they are still quite good friends with a shared passion for their hobbies.

Of course, this clarification in the Official Companion Guide isn't likely to do much to deter shippers as evidenced by literally every fanfiction in history. In any case, we'll still be quite happy to have either of them visit our town.
