The latest Nintendo Direct had a lot of details about Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the newest game in the franchise featuring a cast of colorful characters. While previous Animal Crossing games have taken place in an established town, New Horizons will be putting players on a deserted island with many more challenges to overcome.

Once you touch down on the deserted island in New Horizons, you'll visit Tom Nook at the Resident Services Building to get started. You'll be equipped with a tent and a phone. You can set up the tent pretty much wherever you like on the island, giving you a pretty great degree of freedom in setting up your camp.

Your NookPhone will help you with your life on the island, most readily through recipes for crafting tools and furniture. Players will have to collect basic materials like branches and tools and then use the workbench at Resident Services to make their tools. These tools can then be used to get more materials and other new items.

Furniture can be placed both inside and outside of your tent, and you'll also be able to push or drag it around to get everything just right. If you're not too keen on crafting, you can instead purchase tools and furniture at Resident Services.

Players will also be able to earn "Nook Miles", a separate currency aside from Bells that can be earned by completing activities. These Nook Miles can then be turned in for special items, some of which presumably can only be acquired by spending Nook Miles.

It seems that crafting is definitely going to be a big part of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Even weeds will have their uses! And you'll need everything you can get, too — the weather and time of day will change on the island, mixing up what sort of creatures and events you'll experience. There won't be any cloud saves, though, lest players are tempted to manipulate the clock.

Last (but not least), up to four players can play together on one system and up to eight players can get together online. If you missed yesterday's Nintendo Direct, you can see all of these new features in motion in the video below. Animal Crossing: New Horizons comes to the Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020.
