Amazon and Crystal Dynamics have teamed up and signed a deal to create the next Tomb Raider game series installment. Amazon will not only support the title's development but distribute and publish the game to multiple platforms.
The next-gen Tomb Raider game was announced back in April of this year, 2022, and today we learned that both Amazon and Crystal Dynamics will be working together to create the latest title in an iconic series. Crystal Dynamics was recently purchased by Embracer Group in late August, which they say has allowed them to take a more unconventional approach to publishing agreements. Head of Crystal Dynamics, Scot Amos., stated this in regard to the new agreement,
"Crystal Dynamics has an extraordinary opportunity following our acquisition by Embracer to redefine what a publishing relationship is for Tomb Raider. Transformative is what we’re looking for, and with Amazon Games, we found a team that shares our creative vision, ambitions, and values for a Lara Croft universe across the spectrum of possibilities."
Amos also states that he is eager to travel down this new path with Amazon and that he is thrilled to begin working on the "biggest and best Tomb Raider game" to date. Not too many details about this new game have been released as of yet, though the companies did provide a small amount of information. The developers state that in typical Crystal Dynamics fashion, the game will be a single-player story-driven narrative adventure that will continue Lara Croft's story we all know and love from the Tomb Raider series.
They state that the game will be chock-full of puzzles for the players to solve, as well as plenty of new content to explore and discover. The companies will be utilizing Unreal Engine 5 to develop the title, where they say that the newest and best cutting-edge technology will bring this game to a whole new level of greatness. They said alongside the puzzles and content will come the most expensive Tomb Raider game that has ever been created.
At this time, the game is in the very early stages of development, and as they get further along in the process they will release more information and details. We learned that this is just one of many games that Amazon has in the works, as of course they are working on New World and updating that as time goes by. We also learned there are more games in the pipeline, such as Blue Protocol which is being developed with Bandai Namco. Amazon has also announced they are working on an original IP made by Glowmade, which is said to be an online co-op gaming experience. Though again, not many details on these upcoming games have been released as of yet.
