Upcoming detective adventure game AI: The Somnium Files has been delayed until September in North America. The game was announced last year and was originally set for release in July this year.

Developer Spike Chunsoft says it's sorry for the delay, but that it was necessary to "ensure the best product possible". The company knows people are eagerly awaiting AI: The Somnium Files and wants to meet fans' expectations. As Shigeru Miyamoto says, a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad. AI: The Somnium Files is launching on September 17th in North America, followed by a Japanese launch on September 19th. It'll also launch in Europe, although there's no date for that yet.

AI: The Somnium Files takes place in a near-future Tokyo. Players control Kaname Date, a detective on the trail of a serial killer. One night, a woman's body is found in an abandoned theme park, and Date is dispatched to investigate. He recognizes the woman and, upon investigating the crime scene, finds a small girl with a bloodied ice pick in her hands. Date must get to the truth of the case both by finding clues and by investigating dreams. Check out the GDC 2019 trailer for the game below:

Spike Chunsoft's detective drama has a pretty impressive pedigree. AI: The Somnium Files is the brainchild of Zero Escape director Kotaro Uchikoshi. Yusuke Kozaki, who's worked on No More Heroes and Fire Emblem, is handling character design. The game is a single-player detective adventure with two distinct gameplay segments: investigations and "somnium sequences". Gameplay specifics are fairly thin on the ground right now. Expect more info as we get nearer to the new release date in September.

AI: The Somnium Files will launch for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on September 17th. The standard edition will set you back $59.99, but there's also a collector's edition available for $89.99. The "Special Agent Edition" contains an artbook, a soundtrack CD, a 6-inch acrylic stand, and some stickers.
