The final two Age of Empires 4 civilizations have been announced: you'll be able to play as the Holy Roman Empire and The Rus when this new real-time strategy game debuts later this year.

Age of Empires 4 is, as you might expect, the fourth core game in the Age of Empires franchise. It was first announced all the way back in 2017 and it took more than two years before we got a first look at gameplay. Now, this highly-anticipated real-time strategy game is coming out later this year and

What Are the New Age of Empires 4 Civilizations?

The new Age of Empires 4 civilizations for launch are the Holy Roman Empire and The Rus, two pretty interesting additions to the game. The final two Age of Empires 4 campaigns for launch are The Rise of Moscow and The Mongol Empire.

"We're not gonna show them just yet — that'll come closer to launch — but our two remaining civilizations are the Holy Roman Empire and The Rus," World's Edge Director of Customer Voice Emma Bridle said during the Xbox Games Showcase Extended. "And the names of our two remaining campaigns are The Rise of Moscow and The Mongol Empire."

The Holy Roman Empire is pretty well known in Western history, but you might not know about the Rus. Historians believe that these Slavic ancestors were originally Norse people who settled around the Baltic and Black Seas and remained there from the 8th to 11th centuries CE.

As for the campaigns, The Rise of Moscow will almost certainly be the campaign for The Rus; Moscow has been inhabited for centuries, but it only started to become a city in its own right in the mid 12th century. The Mongol Empire may take players across Asia and Europe and it's doubtful the Holy Roman Empire will feature in this campaign — these two civilizations didn't have any major battles.

Unfortunately, that's all we know for now; World's Edge is keeping their cards pretty close to their chest. In the meantime, you can pre-purchase Age of Empires 4 for PC via its official website starting at $59.99 or your regional equivalent. You'll be able to play it when it launches on October 28, 2021.

What do you think of the new Age of Empires 4 civilizations and campaigns? Which civilization are you looking forward to playing as? Let us know in the comments below!
