Strafe developers Pixel Titans and publisher Devolver Digital have announced that there will be three different special additions coming for the game. They have also announced that, on PC and Mac, you can preorder the game before it launches on May 9. Gamers who preorder Strafe, or pick up one of the special editions will get exclusive access to VV-1N, a special in-game weapon that as they put it, "will change the face of exclusive in-game preorder bonuses forever."
The first of the special editions is the Throwback Collector's Edition. The Throwback edition comes with:
- Steam digital download of the game
- 3.5" Floppy Disk
- Cassette of the Strafe soundtrack
- Lapel pins
- Stickers
- "Indoor Sunglasses"
- 10 Collectible POGS
Next up is the Vinyl Collector's Edition. The Vinyl edition lets you choose between a standard two-disc vinyl set or a special edition which is limited to 300 copies, both produced by Laced Records. The vinyl records come covered in custom artwork and this edition can be bundled with a digital download of the game.
Lastly, the PS4 Collector's Box is a limited run of Strafe and the PlayStation 4 Blu-Ray disc and case is region free and being made by Special Reserve Games. The PS4 Collector's Box will also come with a Steam key for the PC version of the game.
The special editions and pre-order availability seem like they are being done in a very self-aware, tongue-in-cheek way evidenced by Devolver Digital's CFO Fork Parker's statement:
Strafe is already the fastest selling new procedurally generated first-person shooter IP released on the second week of May...Gamers can now get in on this unstoppable revenue train by giving us money earlier than we plan on giving you the game. It’s a win-win if you only consider the best interests of the developer and publisher.Strafe is an FPS trying to recapture the fun and look of the games from 1996 and will be available on PC, Mac, and PlayStation 4 when it launches on May 9. If you want to preorder it on PC, you can also do so at GOG (affiliate) or Steam.
