'Tis the season to be spooky, and that usually means Team Fortress 2's annual "Scream Fortress" event is just around the corner. Unfortunately, this year won't see a new Halloween mode for the Valve game - instead, all the old Halloween modes are coming back out for another scare.
As the Steve Buscemi-themed post on the official Team Fortress 2 blog explains, Valve is working on several large updates for Team Fortress 2 at the moment, and that means that they simply don't have the time to put together a whole new Halloween mode for fans. So while spooky fans may be initially disappointed, the future addition of the Pyro Pack, improvements to the Comp mode, and the campaign mode should soften the blow substantially.
But that doesn’t mean Halloween's cancelled. Next week, as always, every past Scream Fortress event will rise from the dead to terrorize your computers for a limited, horrifying time, including last year’s Merasmissions. We’ll also be shipping some community Halloween maps, all-new custom contracts for those maps, a new Halloween taunt, a new item that gives unusual effects to taunts, and a new cosmetics case!
So that means the Haunted Harvest map, the return of the Horseless Headless Horsemann, Eyeaduct, and the Merasmus in the Halloween-themed Mann vs. Machine missions. While current players may be upset at the missed opportunity to try something different, newer players might enjoy the chance to experience older events (and get their hands on some of the rarer Halloween hats), as well as tempting some older players back into the game by way of nostalgic game modes.
Team Fortress 2's Halloween "update" will start haunting your Steam account next week, and will likely be running until just after Halloween. Get scaring!
Confession time: I haven't played Team Fortress 2 in years. However, the return of the personally-loved Horseless Headless Horsemann goes a long way towards tempting me back into the game. I will very likely be loading the game back up this Halloween, just to relive the good times.
