This guide will go over which city to save in Dragon Age: The Veilguard during one of the game's earliest important choices.
It goes without saying, but don’t read further if you want to avoid spoilers.
On Blighted Wings
During part 6 of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you’ll be tasked with adding Davrin and Lucanis to your team. You can do these in either order, but completing the second of these will automatically start the next main story quest.
Before being able to make it back to the Lighthouse, you’ll be told that both Minrathous and Treviso are under attack. Naturally, Neve and Lucanis want you to save their respective cities — you’ll even get some extra dialogue if you’re part of the Shadow Dragons or Antivan Crows.
Of course, you’ll only be able to save either Minrathous or Treviso, but not both. Each Dragon Age: The Veilguard city choice has its own impact on the aforementioned cities and companions, along with some other gameplay caveats.
What happens if you save Minrathous
Saving Minrathous in Dragon Age: The Veilguard will increase your bond with all companions, except for Lucanis. In fact, Lucanis will temporarily leave and can’t be used for the next few story missions.
- Once Lucanis comes back, he’ll be “Hardened” which causes a few changes:
- The ability Soothing Potion becomes locked (and points spent on it are automatically refunded)
- Some passive ability nodes are improved
- You build relationship slower with him
- Final companion quest is locked behind completing Antivan Crows faction quests
- You’re locked into a set choice during Lucanis’s final companion quest
In regards to Treviso, the city becomes blighted. This changes some of the city’s layout, and you must unlock all fast travel points again.
The Antivan Crows also take a hit, lowering the amount of power that faction has by 100. You permanently lose access to the faction vendor, along with some of the other vendors in Treviso’s marketplace.
In return, the Shadow Dragons gain 400 strength. Minrathous also stays the same, allowing you to use every vendor like before.
What happens if you save Treviso
Saving Treviso in Dragon Age: The Veilguard leads to many of the same positives and negatives as you get from saving Minrathous, but in reverse.
- Companions other than Neve gain bond points, while Neve herself will be unusable for the next few story quest. She also comes back “Hardened”, which brings with it the same changes.
- The ability Replenish becomes locked (and points spent on it are automatically refunded)
- Some passive ability nodes are improved
- You build relationship slower with him
- Final companion quest is locked behind completing Shadow Dragons faction quests
- You’re locked into a set choice during Neve’s final companion quest
The Antivan Crows gain 400 strength, while the Shadow Dragons lose 100. Most vendors in Minrathous are removed too, including the Shadow Dragon vendor.
Both choices add in a new questline to the city that you didn’t save, revolving around trying to deal with the aftermath. Furthermore, there are some dialogue changes when it comes to quests involving either city or faction, though these don’t change the general outcome of said quests.
How to Access Missing Faction Vendor
Regardless of your choice, there’s still a way to access item and gear from the faction vendor you can no longer use. By progressing the story, you’ll eventually trigger a quest in the Lighthouse called The Black Emporium.
Follow the quest and you’ll unlock a new vendor, Xenon the Antiquarian. They’ll sell you any items from the locked vendor, along with other items you may have missed in one-off areas.
The Black Emporium in Dragon Age: The Veilguard costs Etheric Remnants, rather than Gold. This currency is generally found in the Crossroads, along with other areas linked to the Fade.
Items of higher rarity, or gear of a higher upgrade level, will cost more Etheric Remnants. On the positive side, you’re able to buy any of the items without worrying about faction vendor levels.
