In-between hunting, there's always time for a spot of fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds. Follow our guide to find out how to fish, and where you can catch the ones you'll need for quests and a certain Greatsword.

Quicklinks: Tips | Fishing Locations | Fish List

Fishing Tips

Fishing isn't available right away. First, you must continue the main story until you reach the Scarlet Forest and set up the main camp. From there, you can talk to Kanya at the back of camp to acquire your fishing rod.

Catching regular fish generally doesn't require much setup. You just need to visit any body of water and look for fish swimming around, then cast your hook in. Then you can move the bobber around to entice a fish.

You'll have to use different movements until the fish bites. Tapping left/right or towards you, or reeling in by alternating up and down (this can be done both slowly and quickly. Once a regular fish bites, all you have to do is tap R2/RT/LMB to snag it, no button mashing required.

Whoppers

Whoppers in Monster Hunter Wilds are a specific category of large fish, only found in the Scarlet Forest. These require a little extra effort once they bite, and are often hard to find at all.

You have two main locations to catch Whoppers in the Scarlet Forest — Area 12 in the large sectioned off pond, and Area 17 by the sea. However, even if you visit these you'll often not spot large fish.

The best chances of finding a Whopper is by checking for a large pool of fish, represented by lots of splashing and the occasional flying wyverns hovering around. These will nearly always contain Whoppers. You'll also want to the Tuff Joint Bait, obtained by completing Kanya's fishing quests.

When a Whopper bites, you'll need to move your rod in the same direction as the fish. And if it jumps, you need to hold the direction it moves in (usually straight up outside of the Speartuna) and press R2/RT/LMB. Once the fish tires out, mash up and down to start reeling it in.

Farming Whoppers and Changing Time

The A-fish-ionado achievement/trophy requires you to catch 30 Whoppers, which will require at least a few fishing trips. Some also require specific times or environments.

Once you progress the main story and reach High Rank, you can use camps to rest and change both of these. This requires 300 Guild Points each time, but is useful if you need to farm the achievement or find a specific fish.
