This Sugardew Island Farming Guide tells you how to unlock new crops, which crops you should plant, and how to best take care of your farm.

Watering a Large Field on the Farm in Sugardew Island
3x3 grids work best for planting crops in Sugardew Island.

How Farming Works

Sugardew Island farming works just like you'd expect — you have to till the soil, plant seeds, and water them every day until they're grown. Once the seeds are fully grown, you can harvest them and sell your produce in the Store.

Crops should be planted in 3x3 grids. This is because the first upgrade for the Hoe and Watering Can will allow you to till or water a 1x3 area, and the final upgrade for these tools affects a 3x3 area. Using anything other than 3x3 plots for planting crops means you might waste energy by tilling or watering spaces without crops.

Unfortunately, the growth of weeds, trees, and rocks is aggressive in Sugardew Island. You can easily lose 10%–30% of your tilled soil in just a single day if you leave it empty. If you're short on money, it's better to plant cheap crops than to waste energy the next day on tilling more soil.

You can make things a little easier by crafting fertilizers at the Workbench next to your house. You can make either Quick Fertilizer (which makes crops grow faster) or Wet Fertilizer (which saves you from watering crops the next day) for 2 Weeds each.

You should always have at least 1 3x3 plot of Carrots and 1 3x3 plot of Wheat growing. Carrots and Wheat are used to make Energy Bars which are the only way to recharge your energy. You'll also need to grow Wheat to feed your animals; I recommend an additional 1 tile of Wheat for every animal on your farm.

Can Crops Go Bad if You Don't Water Them?

Yes, crops can go bad if you don't water them. However, you can safely miss watering crops for one day without any consequences other than the crops will not grow.

If you miss too many days of watering, however, the crops will wither and turn into weeds.
