A Farming Setup in Sons of the Forest Featuring 4 Planters

Food is one of the most vital resources you’ll need access to in Sons of the Forest. Other than water, it's the thing you need the most often, and it’s usually a damn side harder to find too. Luckily, there is an entire farming system you can take advantage of to provide you with a regular supply of plants for various purposes. Our Sons of the Forest Farming Guide will show you everything you’ll need to get started growing your own food and ingredients in Sons of the Forest

We've got a guide for you if you're just getting started in Sons of the Forest, a full map with every location, and item guides for important items such as the pistol, shovel, and flashlight! Once you've mastered farming, we'll also teach you about food and cooking!

How Sons of the Forest Farming Works

Farming in Sons of the Forest is incredibly simple, and it’s something you can start doing almost immediately. First, you’ll need to create something to grow your crops in, then you’ll need to get your hands on some seeds. Finally, you’ll need to plant your crops and wait for them to grow before you can harvest your food.

Building a Planter

In the last game, you built something called a garden, but this time, in the early game, at least, you built planters. In the Gardening section of the survival guide, you can find Both standing and wall planters, both of which can be made for less than 20 sticks a piece. You can follow these instructions if you’re unsure how to find the correct section or how to place and build your planter.

You should end up with something like this.
  1. Press B to open the guide.
  2. Press X to swap to Construction mode
  3. Click the green plant tab to open gardening.
  4. Click the wall or standing planter you want to build.
  5. Place the wireframe in a suitable location.
  6. Gather enough sticks, and keep tapping E to finish your build.

Growing Crops

Now that you’ve got your planter, you’re going to need to grow some crops, and that means gettings your hands on seeds. The only real way to get seeds is to get your hands dirty. Head out into the forest and start gathering up random berries and flowers. As you collect them, you should occasionally pick up seeds you can use to plant your own versions of the crops. You should get seeds whether you pick or destroy the plant in question, but there’s no harm in swapping up what you’re doing, just in case.

Once you’ve got seeds, just approach your planters, hold E, and select the seeds you want to plant. Be careful, as each planter can only retain one seed. If you’re planning on having a farming empire, then you’re going to have to make quite a few of these. They should grow fresh fruit relatively regularly, though, and if you have any companions, you can actually command them to farm the land for you using the 'get items'  command.

If you're growing flowers, rather than berries, you'll need to wait for the flowers to grow to maturity, which cane take several in-game days, unlike berries that can pop into existence over night. Over the course of a few day/night cycles, flowers will grow into several different stages of maturity, but you won't be able to interact with them until they've grown to a point you'll be able to use them. You should also be able to get some seeds back each time you grow these plants to allow an endless supply of them. Just be careful, as mobs can destroy plans by jumping on them.

Sons of the Forest Farming Guide Crop List

There are plenty of options when it comes to crops, but it can be a bit tricky to figure out where to get them from and what they look like. That’s why we’ve put together this table to make picking your crops much easier. We'll keep adding new crops as they become available, so make sure you check back pretty regularly for the latest updates.
