The Planet Crafter Map and Locations Guide - cover

In this guide, we'll show you The Planet Crafter Map and tell you where you can find crashed ships, bunkers, Storage Crates full of loot, and more!

There's a lot to explore in The Planet Crafter. Once you have the basics of survival down, you're going to want to start investigating the world around you. Read on to learn more about the Map and other points of interest!

The Planet Crafter Map (Pre-Terraform)

The Planet Crafter Map before any terraforming takes place

Much of The Planet Crafter Map is inaccessible in the early game due to blocks of ice closing off access to some caves. However, there is still a large area that you can explore.

You can see icons for places where you can place an Ore Extractor on this map. However, some of these locations are also blocked by ice blocks, so you'll have to terraform the planet some more before you can get to them.

Post Terraform Map

You'll have a lot more access to The Planet Crafter Map after you've progressed terraforming. The melting of ice creates liquid water which changes the dynamics of some of the biomes.

How to Unlock The Planet Crafter Map

You have to complete six steps to unlock The Planet Crafter Map:

  1. Loot a Rocket Engine or reach 175.00 kTI in Terraforming to unlock the recipe.
  2. Unlock the Launch Platform by reaching 345.00 kTI in Terraforming.
  3. Unlock the GPS Satellite T1 by finding and using Blueprint Microchips.
  4. Unlock the Map Screen by finding and using Blueprint Microchips.
  5. Launch a GPS Satellite T1 into orbit.
  6. Build a Map Screen in the area you want to see the map.

This will get you a look at the immediate area on the Map Screen. However, this is just the beginning -- you can upgrade the size of the map by launching higher tiers of GPS Satellite as you progress through the game.

How the Planet Crafter Map Works

Unfortunately, The Planet Crafter map only shows you a small, local area -- there is no way to see the entire playable area from the top down in the game as of Early Access version 0.4.004. (I did, however, manage to cook up a rudimentary map using alternative methods.)

How to Find Locations in The Planet Crafter with Coordinates

Here's how to find locations in The Planet Crafter: If you look at the bottom left of your HUD, you'll see a set of three numbers, like this:

221:12:432

These numbers represent the following:

X:Y:Z

And here's what they mean:

  • X - Horizontal Coordinates (East to West)
  • Y - Vertical Coordinates (Up and Down)
  • Z - Horizontal Coordinates (North to South)

The first three numbers list a specific location in the game world. If I give you those numbers, you can travel in-game until you're at those coordinates and you'll reach that exact location.

With that established, all of the points of interest in our guides (including the derelicts, Storage Chests, and Golden Chests in this guide) are accompanied with matching coordinates. This is how you can find locations in The Planet Crafter.

The Planet Crafter Map and Locations Guide - Loot Locations

An Important Note About Loot Locations

Loot in The Planet Crafter will always spawn in the same location. If you go to the coordinates for one of the Storage Chests, you should find a Storage Chest there in your game, too.

However, the contents of these chests are not consistent. I've tested with the same chest on different files and found slightly different loot each time. This is likely due to this line in the patch notes for its Early Access launch:

  • - Randomly generated content of some crates is now depending on the terraformation level

That's why the listed loot here is marked as "Potential Items" -- I personally saw these items, but you might get something slightly different in your game. I got much of this loot in after having done a significant amount of Terraforming, so it's possible that you might not get as much good stuff. It's unclear if this affects Golden Chests.

Why You Should Wait to Open Storage Chests

Considering the above patch notes, it may be a good idea to wait until later in the game before you open any Storage Chests at all. It may increase your chances of getting more valuable loot. That said, you might have to open them anyway if you run out of critical resources before you can build Ore Extractors.

The Planet Crafter Map and Locations Guide - Golden Crate

The Planet Crafter Golden Crate Locations

Golden Crates are (as you might expect) Storage Crates that are colored gold. This isn't just a paint job, though: in addition to their loot, all Golden Crates will give you 1 Aluminum and 1 Super Alloy when deconstructed.

Each area of the game appears to have at least one single Golden Crate dedicated to it. It's well-worth finding them -- aside from a cool decorative item, you'll also get some rare resources!

Iron, Titanium, Cobalt, Silicon, and Magnesium all spawn throughout the world with slightly different frequencies, but you shouldn't have difficulty finding any of these on the ground wherever you are.
