Another Monster Hunter, another type of endgame weapon to work towards. In Monster Hunter Wilds, Artian weapons are the new endgame grind. These weapons are more than worth getting, and we'll go over how you do so.
Artian Materials
As you progress through the main story, you'll start to encounter Tempered monsters. These are represented by a purple outline around their icon, and Alma will comment on their scar once you start fighting them.
Tempered monsters sometimes drop a new item category called an Artian material as bonus rewards (check the map to see which monsters will drop these.) Artian materials come in three tiers: Damaged (Rarity 5), Rusted (Rarity 6), and Ancient (Rarity 7.)
Once you complete a quest that drops these materials, they'll be identified during the post-quest screen alongside decorations. The actual rarity of these is a level higher than the pre-identified version.
There are a few types of identified material, with different combinations needed to craft different weapons.
Crafting Materials Needed Per Weapon
- Great Sword - 2 Blades, 1 Tube
- Long Sword - 1 Blade, 2 Tubes
- Sword and Shield - 1 Blade, 1 Tube, 1 Disc
- Dual Blades - 2 Blades, 1 Disc
- Hammer - 2 Discs, 1 Tube
- Hunting Horn - 1 Disc, 2 Devices
- Lance - 1 Blade, 2 Discs
- Gunlance - 2 Discs, 1 Device
- Switch Axe - 2 Blades, 1 Device
- Charge Blade - 1 Blade, 1 Disc, 1 Device
- Insect Glaive - 1 Blade, 1 Tube, 1 Device
- Light Bowgun - 1 Tube, 2 Devices
- Heavy Bowgun - 1 Disc, 1 Tube, 1 Device
- Bow - 2 Tubes, 1 Device
You must use three materials of the same rarity, with each granting either an Attack or Affinity (crit rate) boost to the final result. For element type, all three must use the same one to transfer it to the final weapon. Otherwise, you'll end up with an element-free weapon — for Artian weapons this is usually not worth it, as they don't gain extra attack to offset the lack of element.
Reinforcing Artian Weapons
Once crafted, you can power up Artian weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds even further. This is also handled by Gemma, though she requires a special resource for upgrades. These materials are rarely obtained via quests or trading, though there's a faster way to make them.
Head to Azuz in the Oilwell Basin and talk to Roqul. You can smelt the special ore used for upgrades by giving him any spare monster materials you have.
Artian weapons can be upgraded 5 times, with each upgrade giving 1 of 4 bonuses: Attack, Affinity, and Element, along with Sharpness for melee or Capacity for ranged.
If you don't like the upgrades you get, you can dismantle the weapon and get the upgrade points back (you'll still lose the initial crafting materials.)
Farming Artian Weapon Parts
Tempered monsters will usually drop at least a few Artian weapon parts, though your best bet to grab loads of them is in the post-game. Here, you'll sometimes be able to make Investigations containing multiple monsters. 7-8 star Investigations featuring a Tempered monster have the chance to give 10-20 Ancient materials at once, along with Grade 3 decorations if you're farming those too.
If you have a bunch of Artian materials you don't plan on using, these can be melded into new ones by visiting Vio in Suja.
